Update:2020.08.27

(The Projects of Skunk Works: 75 Years of Lockheed Martin's Advanced Development Programsの翻訳)

English Version

Lockheed Martin Skunk Works celebrated its 75th anniversary. The 75th anniversary celebration was held, but is the mysterious silhouette on the commemorative coin (challenge coin) that was handed out to those who were involved in the ceremony a top secret aircraft?

1.75th anniversary of Skunk Works

Skunk works is the common name for Lockheed Martin's Advanced Development Programs, a division of Lockheed Martin Corporation, an American aircraft manufacturing company.

The Skunk Works is an elite small group of select individuals within Lockheed Martin and is famous for having developed the U-2 high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, the SR-71 Blackbird supersonic reconnaissance aircraft, the F-117, the world's first full-scale stealth fighter, and the F-22 and F-35 fighter jets.

This skunkworks was founded in 1943 during World War II and celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2018. In conjunction with this, Lockheed Martin appears to have released a 75th anniversary video and held a 75th anniversary speech and ceremony.

As an aside, The Projects of Skunk Works: 75 Years of Lockheed Martin's Advanced Development Programs is a great book and I recommend it.

2.What are Challenge Coins?

There is a culture in the United States called the "challenge coin". Mainly in the U.S. military, they are medals (coins) about four centimeters in diameter that are given to members in order to improve their sense of belonging and morale. It is engraved with the name of the unit, logo, and the name of the operation in which the member participated.

Reference : What is the Challenge Coin? Awarding Culture from America

In short, they are commemorative coins and medals that originated in the U.S. military. Coins are commemorative items that can be given only to unit personnel and made into souvenirs, or made for commemorative events, etc. The culture of making such commemorative coins is somewhat widespread throughout the United States. In fact, such commemorative coins are often sold at tourist attractions in the United States.

3.Skunk Works 75th Anniversary Challenge Coin

Naturally, in such American soil, a 75th Anniversary Challenge Coin was created as a souvenir to be distributed to those involved in the Skunk Works 75th Anniversary. That is shown in the photo below.

Skunk Works 75th Anniversary Challenge Coin

A seemingly innocuous coin, but don't you notice that it's there? That's the silhouette of the aircraft on the reverse side of the coin. On the reverse side of the challenge coin, there are seven airplanes.

The silhouettes of these aircraft show the military aircraft that Skunk Works has developed. The silhouettes, starting from the leftmost side of the silhouette, and listing the specific models, are

  1. SR-71 Blackbird
  2. RQ-170 Sentinel drone
  3. U-2 high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft
  4. F-35 Lightning II Fighter
  5. F-22 Raptor fighter
  6. ? Unknown
  7. F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter

The silhouette of the "mystery aircraft" is shown sixth from the left.

Among them, the RQ-170 (presumed to be unarmed), which was a top-secret aircraft until its capture by the Iranian military in 2011, is the one that has been released to the public, albeit reluctantly, with the exception of this sixth aircraft from the left, all six of the seven types of aircraft have been released to the public. Moreover, all six are actual mass-produced and commercialized aircraft, and none of the experimental aircraft are listed.

The silhouettes and the length of the white lines are also worth noting. The three models to the left of the middle (SR-71, RQ-170, and U-2) are all reconnaissance aircraft. The three models (F-35, F-22, and F-117) on the right side of the middle are fighter, fighter-bomber, and tactical fighter level aircraft.

Next, focusing on the length of the white line,

the reconnaissance aircraft side is SR-71<U-2<RQ-170.

The tactical fighter is the F-117<F-22<F-35.

The white line seems to indicate the number of years in service. As for the reconnaissance aircraft, the SR-71 was the first to be decommissioned, with the shortest line. The RQ-170 and the U-2 are still in operation today, but the U-2 is likely to be retired before the SR-71 because of its age.

On the tactical fighter side, the F-117, which was retired in 2008, has the shortest line; one might ask which has a longer life span, the F-22 or the F-35. But the F-22 was developed first, and if things go in order, the F-22 will be retired first and the F-35 will be retired later.

In other words, if we summarize the reverse side of this challenge coin, we can see that the aircraft are drawn by the following rules.

  1. All were developed by Lockheed Martin Skunk Works.
  2. All of these aircraft were commercialized and operated by the U.S. military and CIA.
  3. All aircraft from the center to the left are shown as reconnaissance aircraft that have been put to practical use.
  4. All aircraft from the center to the right are shown as fighter, fighter-bomber, and tactical fighter level aircraft.
  5. The length of the white line indicates the length of years in service when divided into reconnaissance and tactical fighters, respectively.

4.Is that a top-secret military aircraft developed by Skunkworks on the coin?

Summary of aircraft types and regularities listed on the challenge coin

What is this mysterious silhouette of a plane? As far as I know, I've never seen a Lockheed Martin aircraft with such a silhouette.

It would be easy to claim that this is the silhouette of a future concept aircraft from Skunk Works, but it would be a stopgap. Because all of the other aircraft are "existing aircraft". In other words, if the design on the reverse side of this coin is drawn with the regularity I mentioned earlier, then it could be real, just like the other six aircraft, as follows.

  1. It is developed by Lockheed Martin Skunk Works.
  2. It is already in practical use and in operation by the U.S. military and the CIA.
  3. It is a tactical fighter level aircraft, and is located to the right of the center.
  4. It may be a multi-role fighter or fighter-bomber.
  5. Based on the length of the white line, it is the most recent aircraft and is newer than the F-35. The first flight of the X-35 proof-of-concept aircraft was in 2000, so the aircraft was developed between 2000 and 2018?

There is a possibility that this aircraft was developed in secret and is already in existence or in operation.
This aircraft is so assertive in design that it protrudes from the circumference of the coin. However, if this silhouette is a concept plane, RQ-170 side is not a concept plane.

Even if the silhouette of this mysterious aircraft is omitted, it is still a good enough design challenge coin, and for the 75th anniversary commemorative item, I would like to draw a concept design that is close to my imagination, when I am drawing a masterpiece of commercial aircraft that I have developed, commercialized, and succeeded. Will you forgive me? It would be better not to write such a thing.

Since it's a limited internal distribution, a souvenir given only to those involved with Lockheed and Skunk Works, to the extent that the full story is not likely to be known, it's possible that he silhouetted a top-secret aircraft already developed by Skunk Works on a challenge coin with only a silhouette, silently claiming pride in its development.

5.How the RQ-170 and F-117 were developed by Skunk Works and released to the public

Developed by Skunk Works, the famous F-117, the world's first stealth fighter jet, was developed in a top-secret system comparable to the Manhattan Project; it reached the initial operational stage in 1983, but this information was not made public until November 1988.

In January 1988, Armed Forces Journal, an American military monthly magazine, published a scoop on the secret deployment of the F-117 stealth aircraft, and judging that it would be difficult to keep it secret forever, the existence of the F-117 was publicly announced for the first time on November 10, 1988. There is. Naturally, the armament and mission of the unit were considered a top secret. Even at the time of disclosure, there was only one photograph.

Next, the RQ-170, which is also depicted on the tip of this challenge coin, was almost unknown until rough photographs were taken at Kandahar Airport in 2007, and until the Iranian capture in 2011.

The RQ-170 was captured by Iran in 2011

Kandahar Airport, Afghanistan, in 2007.
RQ-170, where the rough photos were taken

Diagram of RQ-170

It remains a mystery to this day, and no information has been made public about its performance, development history, or when it was deployed in the field. The number 170 used in the code is a far cry from the sequential numbering of the RQ-1 Predator to the RQ-21 Blackjack (12 and 13 are missing), and this unconventional naming convention is a direct reference to the world's first stealth aircraft, the F-117 Knight It has been done at Hawk.

Thus, there have been and may be more skunkworks military aircraft in the past that have not been released to the public and have been put into operation in secret.

5.Is the mystery aircraft a top-secret aircraft that has not been made public?

Below is a summary of what the author noticed from this silhouette.

  1. The lack of an edge makes it look more like an aircraft designed to prioritize aerodynamic shape rather than a stealth aircraft.
  2. Delta wing, or double delta wing like the space shuttle.
  3. The wings do not connect smoothly to the rear of the fuselage, perhaps because of the two-dimensional nozzle-shaped engine. The possibility of an aircraft optimized for high speed ranges.

Note that one of the projects currently under development by Skunk Works is the SR-72 reconnaissance aircraft, the successor to the SR-71. However, when cross-checked with the imaginary drawing of the SR-72, which is currently available in 2019, it is not consistent silhouette-wise.

If it is a reconnaissance aircraft, it should be depicted on the left side to begin with, but if the model-specific conventions apply as they do, this aircraft depicted on the right side would be considered to be something in the nature of a fighter or attack aircraft, and since it is not a reconnaissance aircraft, it may be less likely to be an SR-72. (However, rumors exist that the SR-72 is being considered to be given bombing capabilities.

Artist's rendition of the SR-72

Sixth Generation Fighter Concept by Skunk Works

When compared to the shape of the 6th generation fighter concept by Skunk Works, the imaginary fuselage feature is a sharper and less similar shape with sharper edges to ensure stealth performance. That's not to say that the manufacturing tolerances of the coin can't make it sharper, as the F-22 and F-117 are drawn with sharper shapes.

The only similarity I know of is the D-21, a ramjet-powered supersonic reconnaissance drone launched from the M-21 (a modified version of the A-12 Blackbird) in the early days of its service. It was designed to operate in the high speed range of about Mach 3. The shape of this model is similar, but the details are different.

The D-21 on the M-21

D-21 reconnaissance drone

Could it be possible that Skunk Works has successfully developed a hypersonic unmanned bomber, a hypersonic unmanned tactical attack aircraft similar to the D-21, in secret and is being operated by the US military and others? If this one is also unmanned, it would mean that it, along with the RQ-170 unmanned reconnaissance aircraft, will literally cross the line of technology (on a coin).

From a single commemorative coin, we've dug in, but if such a top-secret aircraft is being developed, when will we see it?

Ace Combat 7 was recently released and I played it, and I had a ruthlessly difficult time fighting the unmanned fighters. Perhaps it's possible that reality already predates fiction.

Why missiles could not shoot SR-71 Black Bird?

Why missiles could not shoot SR-71 Black Bird?

Update:2020.09.08

Fig.5 SA-2(S-75)

The SR-71 was fired with about 4,000 surface-to-air missiles, all of which were reportedly swept away at its own speed. This article will explain why that was possible.

1. Why the SR-71 was not shot down by surface-to-air missiles?

Following the downing of the U-2 with Gary Powers on board, the SR-71 was developed with the concept of cruising at high altitude at Mach 3 and evading surface-to-air missiles (SAMs). In fact, the SR-71 was hit by a total of about 4,000 SAMs during its operational life, all of which it is believed to have swept away at its own speed. The SR-71 is difficult to deal with for the following three reasons.

1.High altitude and high speed cruise
The SR-71's cruising altitude is more than 25 km, and its low air density makes it difficult to maneuver the missile through the air. In addition, the SR-71 flies at high altitudes and has little opportunity to intercept ground-launched SAMs due to its limited coverage and response time.

2.Low RCS value (radar cross-sectional area)
In order to be able to deal with the invading aircraft in a timely manner, early detection by radar at a distance is necessary. However, its RCS value was extremely low for an aircraft of the time. This made it difficult to detect and intercept at long distances.

3.Electronic Warfare
The SR-71 is equipped with an ECM (radio jamming device) that allows it to deploy electronic warfare against the missile's radar seeker and firing radar, making it difficult to intercept.

In conclusion, increasing the speed will increase the survivability of aircraft against missiles, and lowering the RCS value will further increase this effect. A higher speed would allow the aircraft to escape an attack from an opponent with speed, while a lower RCS value would prevent the radar from capturing it at close range, thus eliminating the opponent's response time, or opportunity to wait.

The SR-71 could cruise at Mach 3. So the time scale to be dealt with would be on a different dimension than previous aircraft.

If the SR-71's cruise altitude was about 25km, a simple manual calculation of the earth's arc would give it a vantage point of about 600km over the horizon, which it could see from 600km away.

In other words, it could be detected by enemy radar from 600 km away. However, radar detection is dependent on the RCS of the aircraft, so even with a line-of-sight range, it is not always immediately detectable.

According to Grobal Security. org, the SR-71 has a forward RCS of 0.01 m2, a very low level for an aircraft at the time. (Even if it wasn't this low, multiple sources indicate that it was clearly low for an aircraft of the 1960's.)

This means that at the time of its development in the 1950s and 1960s, the United States was already pursuing stealth performance. In fact, the Blackbird was developed after measuring the RCS on the ground. The inclination of the vertical tail and the chine shape of the forward fuselage were adopted to reduce the RCS value, and as a result, it had a positive effect on the aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft. Or, conversely, the refinement of the aircraft's aerodynamics has resulted in it having a positive effect on the RCS value.

Fig. 1 Mock-up of a blackbird fixed in the desert, facing upside down
This is a setting for performing RCS measurements

The first generation of radio absorber was also developed and applied to the fuselage surface of the SR-71. For Lockheed, it was the starting point for the subsequent development of the F-117, F-22 and F-35 fighter stealth aircraft.

In reality, however, the SAMs were fired at about 4,000 rounds, and the fact that the missiles were being fired at that many missiles means that they were detected by the enemy's radar. However, we can only say that the radar detectable range of the aircraft was "shorter than that of any other aircraft".

2. High altitude, high speed cruise and low RCS to improve aircraft survivability

To illustrate the advantages of high altitude, high speed cruise, and low RCS to improve survivability, consider an SR-71 coming head-on into a surface-to-air missile (SAM) placed at a reconnaissance site. To illustrate the advantages of the SR-71, consider the SR-71's frontal approach to a surface-to-air missile (SAM) placed at a reconnaissance point.

Fig.2 Detection distance of the Russian X-band radar to the RCS target (Estimated calculation results)

Now, assuming that the reaction time from radar target detection to missile launch takes about 20 seconds, the SR-71, traveling at a speed of about 1 km/s (Mach 3), will already be about 20 km closer from detection to launch.

The acceleration and speed of the missile are not uniform, but if the missile can reach Mach 4 speeds on average (a high performance estimate), even when simply launched vertically, it would take a minimum of about 20 seconds for the SR-71 to reach a cruising altitude of 25km.

In reality, however, the flight path is not as simple as that; it would take about 30 to 40 seconds to track and ascend with a horizontal speed component, and then initial and intermediate guidance to guide the aircraft to a position suitable for interception. The flight path is not as simple as that, and it would take about 30-40 seconds. In this case, the SR-71 would have to travel 25-30 kilometers before it could actually reach the target, so the missile would have to fly past the reconnaissance and SAM launch sites, and the missile would have to "chase" them as it pursued them.

Even if the missile could be guided to a geometric position where they could meet before passing, the meeting point would be a high-altitude target at a horizontal distance of several kilometers from the SAM's installation point and would be almost directly above the SAM's firing radar.

At a horizontal distance of 10km, the angle of attack to the radar is about 68 degrees, as can be seen by a simple manual calculation. At a horizontal distance of 5km, the angle of attack is about 79 degrees, which is a very high angle of attack, and the radar will be looking straight up. These are unexpected operating conditions for a radar designed to detect objects at long distances relative to the horizontal direction, making target supplementation and guidance extremely difficult.

These simple assumptions are based on the assumption that the radar is going straight into a SAM placed in a reconnaissance area.

This is because the missile guidance and control law for dealing with a high-speed target is generally the counter-parallel method where the missiles meet in front of the target to minimize the acceleration error in the forward direction of the target, and the missile body must be guided to its geometric position, which makes the maneuvering more difficult than in the case of a head-on collision. Because of the conditions.

The angular resolution of the radar will also have an impact. Needless to say, if the SR-71 deploys electronic warfare against SAMs, it will reduce its chances of being shot down even more.

In this simple way, we can see the following.

  1. The RCS is so low that it can't be detected until just before.
  2. Because of the high altitude of the flight, it takes time for the SAM to reach the sky.
  3. Detection and firing would require reaction time and a physical ascent of the missile, but while it is ascending, it will likely break away from its shootable range.
  4. Even if the missile is fired, it will have to chase the SR-71 in pursuit, or deal with it almost directly above the firing radar. It is extremely difficult to shoot them down in this situation.
  5. In addition to these, if electronic warfare was set up, it would be nearly impossible to shoot down.

The situation is disastrous for the Soviet side.

3. Interception of the SR-71 by an S-75 (SA-2) missile

The above discussion has discussed the problems with assuming that modern surface-to-air missiles can deal with the SR-71, but if we assume the SAMs of the 1960s, when the SR-71 was in operation, the performance is naturally lower and more difficult to deal with.

For example, the S-75 (SA-2), which was used as the mainstay of the Soviet Union's missile system at the time, is a two-stage missile with booster separation, which means that the missile is unable to cover a certain amount of distance from the launcher. For the S-75, which targets bombers and other low-speed targets, the guidance law is beam-riding navigation, and the performance of the fire control radar is inferior to that of the S-75.

Fig.3 Overview of the area where the SR-71 can be intercepted by an S-75 (SA-2) missile (USA)

Therefore, as shown in the above figure, some Western observers argue that they were only able to deal with it in a limited area (5-9 NM (9.3-16.7 km) horizontal distance and M3.0-3.5 velocity range). Even when intercepting in this area, radar acquisition from a considerable distance and timing is required to achieve these meeting conditions.

However, the above figure is based on a performance estimate and may not be so accurate. (This will be discussed later.) Moreover, the SR-71 could take evasive action at the time it fired its radar, not to mention the use of electronic countermeasures.

The S-75 missile that shot down the U-2 was fired multiple times before it was finally shot down. This is the case with the SR-71, which has a high speed and high altitude of Mach 3 (same altitude as the U-2, 25km), so it is a difficult question of how many shots to fire to be effective.

So what about dealing with it after overtaking it? The SR-71 is a reconnaissance aircraft, so the missile is in pursuit of its target, and if it is a bomber, the SAM position is attacked and destroyed as soon as it passes over the target's head, so follow-up fire is almost impossible.

When overtaking a reconnaissance point, a missile fired before overtaking it must turn 180 degrees in the direction of fire, resulting in a loss of velocity energy and a disadvantage for intercepting the missile. The requirement to turn by aerodynamic maneuvering at high altitude is another factor that makes tracking difficult, as low altitude maneuvering is ineffective.

Even if the missile were to be pursued at a horizontal speed of Mach 4, its relative velocity would be reduced to Mach 1. If the missile is propelled by a rocket motor, the missile would gradually decelerate due to air resistance after the end of its combustion, so it would not always be able to maintain its maximum speed.

If the missile loses propulsion and falls below Mach 3, it will not be able to catch up with the SR-71's high-speed cruise and will fail to intercept the missile. In other words, the SAMs are required to maintain a speed of Mach 3 at an altitude of at least 25km.

The minimum requirement for a chase is to maintain a speed of Mach 3 at an altitude of at least 25 kilometers. [I said it twice because it's important]

If an older SAM, such as the S-75, was fired before it could overtake, even if it made a sharp turn, it would not be able to follow the SR-71 with its aerodynamic maneuvering snake and the interception would fail. These are simple results that can be answered with a little thought. This is described in the following Russian documents.

Fig.4 Overview of the area where the SR-71 can be intercepted by an S-75 (SA-2) missile (USSR)

Unlike the U.S. Fig. 3, Fig. 3 shows a range of 15.5-30 km horizontally, which differs from the U.S. Fig. 4 and Fig. 5, which are more accurate. To determine which is more accurate, see Fig. 4 and Fig. 5 above from the Russian side and Fig. 6 from the Chinese HQ-2, which was produced under license in China.

Fig.5 SA-2 (S-75) interceptable area

Fig.6 HQ-2B interceptable area (China Licensed Production Version S-75)

According to these data, the booster rocket cannot be detached until after a horizontal distance of about 11-12 km, and the same is true for the booster rocket. Therefore, the Russian Fig. 4 is more likely to be accurate than the American Fig. 3.

It is also understood that the SA-2 (S-75), an older SAM, is unable to intercept targets at an altitude of 25 km, even if it fires at them, if it comes within about 15 km horizontally of the launcher. This is thought to be due to the performance limitations of the aforementioned shooting radar.

Older SAM sites, such as the S-75, operated with four to six launchers in one package, but each launcher was set to be tilted in one direction and was designed to deal with threats from only one direction.

As a result, once it had passed the reconnaissance point, further fire would be added to intercept the aircraft in the opposite quadrant, but it would be launched in pursuit of the Mach 3 SR-71.

In this case, as mentioned earlier, the high speed SR-71 is likely to escape out of the SAM's range while bringing the SAM at initial altitude and speed of zero into meeting conditions against the SR-71 cruising at an altitude of about 25 km and speed of Mach 3. With an S-75 with a range of about 50 km, it would be nearly impossible for the S-75 to meet, even if it were to fire while overtaking the reconnaissance point.

Under the conditions of a follow-up launch, it would be impossible for the SAM to even follow up unless it was a long-range SAM with a range of 100 km or more. If the SAMs were to shoot down the SR-71, they would have to use powerful radar to detect the aircraft at a greater distance and fire under optimal conditions while it was approaching the SAM launcher, or they would have to use a long-range, high-performance SAM.

In fact, the former Soviet Union developed a long-range SAM: the S-200 (SA-5), which is also capable of dealing with the SR-71, and the Soviet air defense forces conducted numerous firings against the SR-71's entering at high altitude, but never succeeded in shooting them down.

As an aside, I'd like to recommend the movie "Bridge of Spies", about a lawyer involved in the exchange of Gary Powers for Soviet spies, as a good movie that shows the background of the time when the U-2 was shot down and the development of the SR-71 was rushed.
